The Slaak
Rotterdam, Netherlands
2019
Housed in a former newspaper building, The Slaak Rotterdam is a characterful boutique hotel where history and contemporary design meet. Once home to one of the Netherlands’ leading national newspapers, the monumental structure has been transformed into a vibrant destination, retaining its strong architectural identity while embracing a refined, modern expression.
Inspired by the elegance and optimism of the 1950s, the interior concept blends a rich palette of greens, warm yellows, and soft pinks with timeless materials such as marble, wood, and brass. The result is a layered and atmospheric environment where past and present coexist in a cohesive and confident way.
For this project, Made Specific developed bespoke lighting solutions across the hotel. From guest rooms and conference spaces to the lobby and restaurant. Each element is carefully designed to complement the distinctive interior concept while enhancing both functionality and mood.
In the guest rooms, the lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere, supporting moments of rest and relaxation through soft, diffused illumination. In the public areas, the lighting plays a more dynamic role accentuating materials, highlighting architectural details, and contributing to the vibrant social energy of the spaces.
Throughout the project, the focus has been on creating a balanced interplay between decorative and functional light. The result is a cohesive lighting experience that reinforces the hotel’s unique identity where heritage, design, and contemporary comfort come together in a refined and memorable setting.
